Capturing a story
Capturing a story gives the viewer the characteristics of the environment and helps them gather detail on the surroundings.
An example of this is when films have opening scenes which introduce the town/city and have a high or long shot of them and then smoothly moves closer to either a street or building and then on towards a person itself.
Images can have the same technique if constructed in the same way.
Photographic stories can usually be divided or grouped into four categories which are:
- Establishing Image
- Action Image
- Portrait
- Detail Image
Establishing Shot
It is generally a long or extreme-long shot at the beginning of a scene indicating where or even when, the rest of the scene takes place, however this doesn't neccisarly have to be at the beginning of film etc.
Action shot
This captures the action and interaction of the people or animals involved in the story, many of the images that photographers capture may fall into this category if there is a lot happening within the image.
Portraits
Portraits are key to any story because thats what a story is mainly about and also because people are interested in other people and will want to identify and get to know the characters of the story, the viewer will always be drawn due to the portraits.
Environmental portraits
Environmental portraits differ from straight head and shoulder portraits because with environmental portraits you see the location off the story, it extends the communication beyond making images of the character and the location separately.
Close up or detailed image
This is where the photographer needs to acquire significant detail within the overall scene, the detail is enlarged which is either to draw the viewers attention to it or to just increase the amount or quality of this information - the detail may have an inscription or small detail on it which the viewer requires to read.
Use your initiative to capture photographs using all four of these shots which we have discussed:
- Establishing shot, Action Shot, Portrait shot and detailed shot.
